Our Mission

The mission of the Moscow Rural Fire District is to protect life, property, and the environment through effective fire suppression, emergency response, prevention, and community partnerships.

About Us

The Moscow Rural Fire District serves approximately 128 square miles across Latah County, Idaho, including the City of Viola. Commonly referred to as “Moscow Rural,” the district provides fire protection and emergency response services to a largely rural population, working in close coordination with regional partners to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Operations are based out of two strategically located stations. The district’s primary facility is co-located with Moscow Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) Station 2 at 1300 White Avenue. This five-bay station serves as headquarters and houses seven apparatus, with brush trucks positioned for rapid deployment following the first-out engine. In addition, Moscow Rural Fire District jointly operates from MVFD Station 3, a six-bay facility that supports both rural and city response, housing a combined total of six apparatus.

Emergency medical services are provided through MVFD’s Ambulance Company, while specialized rescue services—including extrication and technical rescue—are delivered by MVFD’s Rescue Company. This collaborative model allows for efficient use of resources and a high level of service across jurisdictions.

The district operates primarily with on-call personnel and does not maintain full-time staffing at its stations, except during periods of increased demand such as severe weather events. Firefighters are alerted via voice pager and radio, responding either to their assigned station or directly to the scene when necessary.

Law enforcement support within the district is provided by the Latah County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho State Police, ensuring coordinated public safety services throughout the region.
